Edo Hand-drawn Nagoya Obi: The String



小さな変わり市松の紋意匠縮緬に、雅やかな紐紋様を描いた名古屋帯。

染め分けられた裏柳と紅淡藤は、濃地でも薄地でも
いろいろな色の着物に合わせやすい配色で、房の色が程良いアクセントに。
また、たれにぽつりと入れた紅が後ろ姿を華やかに彩ります。

季節を問わず、締めていただける意匠です。
また、紐には縁を結ぶ意味もありますので
新たな出会いを心待ちにするお正月や
ご縁を大切にしたい方と同席する際に締めるなどしても
思いを託す装いになるのではないでしょうか。
平安絵巻のような題材の観劇などにも楽しめそうです。

"Yuzen" is a type of silk fabric using a Japanese traditional resist dyeing technique. Kyo Yuzen, Kaga Yuzen and Edo Yuzen are well-known. These were named after the places that each silk came from: Kyoto, Kanazawa and Tokyo. While the Kyo and Kaga Yuzen are splendid with a rich variety of vivid colors, the Edo Yuzen is sophisticated with a few kinds of quiet colors. Especially indigo makes a striking contrast with white color, each gives a cool impression.

This Nagoya Obi has small unique checkered patterns on the original surface on which graceful string patterns are hand-drawn with the Edo Yuzen.

The two colors of the Obi (each named after common Japanese plants, Willow and Wisteria) go well with a wide range of kimono. When decorated as a tapestry and a table center, this fabric adds a calm atmosphere to the room. Meanwhile, it is interesting that three bright colors at the edge of the string patterns create a slight difference in nuance.

When wearing it with kimono, one of the three colors, crimson red, comes on your back. It definitely turns you into more captivating.

This bicolor design fits in very well with every seasons.

Traditionally, most Japanese patterns are not just "patterns", but have their own meanings. Since strings tie things, this pattern is considered as a good luck symbol for relationships. At a New Year's celebration, or important social events, this Obi brings happiness, joy and success to you.
